Short-term health insurance provides temporary medical coverage for when you need to bridge the gap between health plans. This is especially helpful if you retire shortly before you or a spouse reaches Medicare eligibility and lose employer group coverage.

Short-term health insurance coverage varies depending on the plan. It generally provides coverage for preventive care, doctor visits, urgent care, and emergency care. There may also be coverage for prescriptions. The deductibles and copay also vary between plans.
Short-term insurance plans are not required to meet ACA guidelines. They generally will not provide coverage for preexisting conditions. Some plans may start to cover preexisting conditions after a 12 month period. You need to check the plan’s definition for “preexisting”. This may be limited to the prior 24 months. Short-term health plans are also not required to cover general preventative care. However, some plans may cover limited preventative care.
Unlike the ACA Marketplace, you can enroll in Short-term coverage at anytime without an enrollment period. But Short-term plans are always subject to medical underwriting. If you have major health conditions, then your rate could be higher or you could be denied coverage.
