These may be welcoming savings for people who need to stretch their income throughout their retirement years. So let’s celebrate the art of aging and savings—with this guide to senior perks!
Government Property Tax Relief for Seniors
There are many states that have some sort of property tax program for seniors to help lighten the financial burden. These programs can be exemptions, credits or freezes. This can make a big difference for many who are seeing skyrocketing home values. Increased home values means increased tax bills! At the time of this article, 17 states exempt seniors from property taxes, 5 states offer tax freezes, and another 17 provide them with some sort of tax credits1. If your state does not offer anything, keep an eye on the news because several more are trying to pass similar initiatives.

Grocery Store Savings for Seniors
Groceries are a major expense, and access to affordable healthy food continues to be important as we age. There are many grocery stores that offer senior day discounts for groceries. The amount of discounts and items that can be purchased does vary by store. The day of the month and week that seniors can access these discounts may also vary. For example, Fry’s Food offers senior discounts for people 55+ on the first Wednesday of each month. Their discount is for 10% off most items in the store, including groceries, health and beauty, produce, meat, bakery, and even housewares, apparel, books and cards. As you can see, their discount includes a lot of items beyond just groceries that can help you save more.
On the other hand, Fred Meyer has a senior discount on the first Tuesday of each month. But their discounts are more limited on what you can purchase. Their discount includes private brand groceries and nutrition (i.e. Kroger, Fred Meyer, Simple Truth), as well as other apparel and home items. So not all brands of groceries. Unfortunately, as of this blog post, Walmart does not have a senior discount. Check with the stores in your area to see how and when you can save!

The larger chain restaurants tend to have senior discounts more often than others. Another saving tip around dining out is to join rewards programs of different restaurants. If you are a rewards member, then you get to earn points toward free meals AND some give you free items each year on your birthday. Einsteins, Starbucks, Applebee’s, Baja Fresh, and Chipotle, just to name a few. Always check ahead of time because some offers can vary by location as well.
If you need to do some shopping for clothes, home, or other item, then look for retail stores with discounts near you or online. Kohl’s currently offers 15% discount for people 60+ every Wednesday! Other retail stores with current senior discounts include Autozone, Goodwill, Ross, Walgreens, Michael’s, etc.
