The Trump Administration has officially opened the Trump Rx website. If you are a Medicare beneficiary with Part D prescription drug coverage, you may be wondering if the new TrumpRx will affect your costs or save you money. We go over the TrumpRx platform, which drugs are included on the site, and if it will help Medicare beneficiaries.
What is TrumpRx?
TrumpRx is not an official law put forth by Congress, but rather a government-run platform. It offers coupons and direct-to-manufacturer discounts for buying some brand-named drugs. It is similar to existing discount drug sites, like GoodRx and GlicRx. Unlike other discount sites, TrumpRx has discount prices on name brand drugs only. These coupons are only for people paying cash out-of-pocket, without using their insurance. If your prescription drug plan covers your prescriptions, then you may already be paying less than the TrumpRx coupons.
What Drugs are Listed on TrumpRx?
As of the date of this article, the site includes 43 drugs that cover a range of popular weight loss drugs, infertility, diabetes, anti-inflammatory, estrogen therapy, smoking cessation, and some inhalers. There are a few other drug classes in the mix for various other conditions. See full list below.
As mentioned, the list only includes brand-named drugs. This is even the case for brand-name drugs that now have generic options available. If you take a brand-name drug and do not have insurance, then TrumpRx may be a good fit to help lower your cost on a few select drugs.
If you take a generic version drug, then this is not the case. We will cover how this affects your costs in the next section.
What generic drugs are on TrumpRx?
As mentioned, all the prescriptions listed on the TrumpRx coupon platform are for brand-named drugs. However, many of these drugs already have a generic option available that you can find for considerably lower cash out-of-pocket prices on different platforms. For instance, Levoxyl is the brand name for the generic Levothroxine used to treat Hypothyroidism. The generic version is 72% cheaper on GoodRx versus the brand name on TrumpRx. Another example is Colestid, which is the brand name for colestipol to help lower cholesterol. The generic version is 67% cheaper with GoodRx.
If you take the generic equivalent and do not have insurance, then you should compare prices on GoodRx. If you take the name brand and do not have insurance, then TrumpRx may save you but still compare it to other discount drug sites. But if you have Part D or commercial insurance, your costs may be lower for most drugs on the TrumpRx list.
Will TrumpRx save me money if I have Medicare or other drug coverage?
Most Medicare recipients have some sort of prescription drug coverage. This may be a Part D prescription plan, or an employer group plan if you are still working. Either way, whether TrumpRx will save you money or not will depend on your type of coverage and your plan’s formulary.
TrumpRX and Medicare Part D Prescription Coverage
If you have a Part D prescription drug plan and your drugs are covered by your plan, then you will need to compare your plan’s copays and annual drug spending to TrumpRx. If you do take one of the expensive brand-named drugs, there is a good chance you will save more in the long run on your plan. This is because the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) passed in 2022 had major reforms to Part D prescription drugs. The IRA put a cap on how much you would spend on drugs covered by your plan’s formulary. The cap in 2026 is $2,100 for the year. After this, you pay $0 at the pharmacy. Because TrumpRx transactions are typically considered cash payments, it will not apply to Medicare Part D deductibles or the out-of-pocket maximums. This means you could end up spending more than the $2,100 maximum out-of-pocket cap.
TrumpRx and Commercial Health Insurance
If you have a commercial health plan, such as an employer group plan, then most of the expensive brand-named drugs on TrumpRx are more expensive than if you use the drug company’s Copay Assistance cards. Copay Assistance already exist on the drug manufacturer’s websites. They help keep your copays down when your insurance deductibles and copays are too high. But if your insurance plan does not cover a specific drug in their formulary, then you may or may not be able to use the copay assistance from the drug companies. If not, then TrumpRx could help reduce costs for that brand-named drug when paying cash out-of-pocket. The amount you pay using TrumRx coupons will be out-of-pocket and would not count toward your insurance plan deductible or maximum out-of-pocket on commercial plans as well.
The Full List of TrumpRx drugs with comparison of lower priced options
We created a full list of all 43 drugs and prices from the TrumpRx site. We then listed other sources with prices next to each drug where you can get them at a lower price. Other sources include if a generic equivalent is available, as well as copay assistance options from the drug manufacturers. These prices are as of the date of this article, and we used the lowest prices/similar dosage listed on the TrumpRx site to compare side-by-side. The second column list if a lower priced option is available. This lower price can be if lower generic version is available on GoodRx for cash buyers, or Copay Assistance through the drug manufacturer if you have insurance. You can view the list at the end of this article.
Conclusion on TrumpRx and Medicare prescription costs
The new TrumpRx platform may offer savings for a small group of people paying full cash for select brand-name drugs. At this stage, it is not necessarily going to reduce costs for most—especially for Medicare beneficiaries with prescription coverage. TrumpRx purchases do not count toward your insurance deductibles or maximum out-of-pocket, so using a coupon could cost you more over the course of the year. The smartest approach is to compare prices carefully: look at generic options on other discount platforms, check your plan’s formulary, review your copays, and consider manufacturer copay assistance (if applicable).
